Are You Living in Urgency Mode or in Alignment?
This season’s Bloom Box mantra is “I choose alignment over urgency.”
This mantra hits home for me.
I remember when I was just about to go on medical leave, how terrible I felt running from one obligation and task to another.
It got so bad that I was getting sick daily.
Then I stopped sleeping.
After I began to recover, I decided that I would never reach that state of urgency again.
From my experience, the first step to living in alignment with our bodies’ needs and our hearts’ desires is learning to notice when we are living urgently rather than mindfully.
Below are five signs you may be living in urgency mode, even if you think you are “doing self-care.” How many do you recognize?
1. You Rush Through Things That Are Meant to Help You Relax
Whether it is a Bloom Box ritual or a nervous-system regulating bath, you rush through the experience, telling yourself you do not have the time. Yes, you are physically engaging in self-care, but mentally you are already on to the next task.
Rest becomes something to complete rather than something to experience.
2. You Feel Subtly Behind, Even on Calm Days
Even when the laundry is folded, the kitchen is clean, the house is tidy, and your to-do list is crossed off, there is a lingering sense of foreboding. You feel behind, or at least you believe you are.
You struggle to feel satisfied with your progress.
3. You Judge Yourself for Needing Rest
When your body asks for rest, you criticize yourself. You tell yourself you have not earned it or that it can wait. You feel constant pressure to be doing something, even when your nervous system is asking for a pause.
Deep down, rest feels undeserved.
4. You Make Decisions Quickly to Avoid Discomfort
Your default answer is “yes.” Yes, you will pick up the kids. Yes, you will host the PTO party. Yes, you will chip in for the group gift.
You do not pause long enough to check whether the decision is aligned. Urgency mode kicks in, and later you find yourself overwhelmed or resentful.
5. Stillness or Silence Feels Uncomfortable
Whether it is sitting quietly alone or meditating in the bath, stillness feels unsettling. Urgency mode has trained you to associate movement with safety.
When you are still, you feel unproductive. When you feel unproductive, you feel unsafe.
Choosing Alignment Over Urgency
Can you relate to these signs of urgency mode?
If so, you are not alone. I know how easy it is to get pulled back into urgency thinking, even after making conscious changes. I still notice it in myself from time to time.
There is another way to live.
Slow, intentional living means filtering decisions through your values. It means pausing before responding. It means allowing rest without having to earn it. It is about being, not just doing.
